Electric Bus Charging Stations
Project Details
Ardmore Roderick supports the Chicago Transit Authority’s electric bus fleet expansion.
This project created new power distribution buildings and prototype overhead charging systems that comply with SAE J3105 Electric Bus standards. Ardmore Roderick played multiple roles in this design-build project, which included constructing power distribution buildings at three strategic locations: Chicago Austin (western limit), Navy Pier (eastern limit), and the Chicago Bus Garage. These sites support rapid charging for the new electric buses along CTA’s Chicago Avenue route.
One significant challenge was designing and constructing improvements with minimal operational disruptions and navigating dense underground utilities at all sites. Ardmore Roderick was responsible for site civil design, topographic surveys, utility relocation design, structural design, and agency permit development. The firm also led Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) investigations to mitigate utility conflicts, ensuring smooth construction and preventing delays. Additionally, Ardmore Roderick coordinated with other firms for submittals and provided design support services during construction.
