Last week, Ardmore Roderick Chief Executive Officer, Rashod R. Johnson, PE, was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the UIUC Grainger College of Engineering.

From his beginnings on the South Side of Chicago, to leading a nationally recognized firm, Rashod’s journey reflects resilience, purpose, and a commitment to creating opportunity for others.

During Friday’s panel at Grainger Auditorium, honorees reflected on their time at Illinois, the paths that shaped their careers, and where they see the future of engineering heading. A common theme emerged: the next generation of engineering will be defined by bold thinking, continuous learning, and lifting others along the way.

This recognition is not just a celebration of achievement; it’s proof that perseverance and purpose can create lasting impact far beyond the path you start on.

Last Weekend, Ardmore Roderick team members came together for our first annual Safety Rodeo, a day dedicated to strengthening the safety culture that drives our work forward!

Led by our Safety Director, Wally Waltersdorf, the event brought together team members who are behind the wheel every day, traveling to project sites across our communities. Through hands-on training, team-building activities, and a few well-earned breaks with great food, the day focused on sharpening skills, sharing knowledge, and reinforcing safe practices in the field.

At Ardmore Roderick, safety isn’t just a priority—it’s a core value. Events like this ensure we continue putting that commitment into action every day.

In honor of Black History Month, we’re proud to highlight the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) — an organization that has shaped generations of engineers and leaders.

Founded in 1975 at Purdue University by a group of six students known as the “Chicago Six,” NSBE was created to support Black engineering students and address the high dropout rates they faced at the time. What began with six founding members has grown into one of the largest student-led organizations in the country, with more than 700 chapters and 24,000 members worldwide.

For 50 years, NSBE has inspired, educated, and empowered students and professionals in STEM. We’re proud to have Ardmore Roderick team members who have been a part of the NSBE community, including Field Engineer, Jordan Lawton and our President, Sharon Jean-Baptiste, PE. NSBE’s impact continues to foster community, elevate diverse voices, and expand access within the engineering profession.

In honor of National Engineer’s Week, we are highlighting some of the amazing engineers at Ardmore Roderick!

Jamaal Payton joined Ardmore Roderick in April 2023 and has been contributing to impactful infrastructure projects across the region.

“I pursued engineering because it combines meaningful, impactful work with intellectual challenge and strong career growth potential. I enjoy solving complex problems and delivering practical solutions, but what excites me most is the diversity of career paths and industries engineering touches. It’s a collaborative, high-performance environment that continually challenges professionals to grow and innovate.”

- Favorite Project: The Red Line Extension, which he is currently supporting.
- Fun Engineering Fact: Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world, with techniques dating back to the Romans and Ancient Egyptians.
- Fun Fact About Jamaal: He is a former Division I football player, an avid home chef, and has a strong interest in real estate development.

In honor of National Engineer’s Week, we are highlighting some of the amazing engineers at Ardmore Roderick!

Jon Campbell joined Ardmore Roderick in November 2024, bringing over 15 years of experience in mechanical and electrical engineering. He currently leads the MEP Design Group at Ardmore Roderick, delivering integrated building systems for complex infrastructure projects.

“I have always liked figuring out how things work, but I also wanted a career where that curiosity leads to tangible outcomes. Engineering is where I can solve problems, build things, and see the impact.”

- Favorite Project: supporting the design of a quantum computing facility at the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park in Chicago, focused on planning and coordinating cryogenic and utility infrastructure.
- Fun Engineering Fact: Comfort in buildings and homes is basically invisible engineering. If nobody notices the HVAC, plumbing, or controls, that usually means the engineering was done right.
- Fun Fact About Jon: “Early in my career I took a hiatus from engineering to move to Brisbane, Australia on a working holiday visa. I worked a couple of fun jobs while traveling and exploring, and it ended up being one of the best life experiences I’ve had. My advice is to take a leap like that if you ever get the chance, even a short break or a bold change of scenery can give you new perspective and energy that you bring back into your career.”

In honor of National Engineer’s Week, we are highlighting some of the amazing engineers at Ardmore Roderick!

Anna started as an intern in 2019 and officially became part of the Champaign team in August 2022. Today, she serves as a Field Engineer in our Charlotte office, continuing to grow her career and impact across projects.

“I went into engineering to get a better understanding of the foundations of buildings and how they are constructed. I love that engineering allows us to construct the designs that architects make - it creates a fun challenge!”

- Favorite Project: O’Hare International Airport
- Fun Engineering Fact: Nora Blatch became the first female civil engineer after graduating from Cornell University in 1905.
- Fun Fact About Anna: In 8th grade, she built a remote-control car out of scrap parts!

We’re proud to see Anna’s journey from intern to field engineer and excited to watch her continue building her future with Ardmore Roderick.

In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting extraordinary Black historical figures in engineering.

Today we celebrate Archie Alexander. Alexander was an architect and engineer, and was the first black graduate from the University of Iowa engineering program in 1929. At the age of 26, Alexander formed his own engineering company with former football teammate, Maurice A. Repass. Alexander & Repass was responsible for the construction of many roads and bridges in the DC area such as the Tidal Basin Bridge, the Whitehurst Freeway, and an extension of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Alexander was also appointed Governor of the US Virgin Islands in 1954 by President Eisenhower!

His leadership and achievements left a lasting mark on both the built environment and public service, reflecting the power of engineering to shape communities and history alike.
