IDOT Phase I/II I-57 Sadorus Road Bridge Replacement

Project Details
Reimagining a Key Crossing to Improve Safety and Modernize Mobility
Ardmore Roderick delivered Phase I and Phase II engineering services for the replacement of the Sadorus Road bridge over I-57, addressing the need to upgrade an aging structure that no longer met current design and safety standards. The project began as a potential rehabilitation effort, but structural analysis confirmed that a full replacement was the most reliable and cost-effective solution.
Ardmore Roderick led all preliminary engineering activities, including bridge inspection, condition reporting, geotechnical investigations, and development of Type, Size, and Location plans. The team then advanced the Phase II design effort, preparing final plans, specifications, roadway improvements, and coordination with utilities.
Key actions included evaluating replacement alternatives, improving vertical clearance, reconfiguring bridge geometry, and incorporating safer railings and integral abutments to remove roadside hazards along the interstate.
The resulting bridge design enhances safety, increases clearance for freight movement, and provides a more resilient and modern structure for long-term regional connectivity. The project supports a safer travel experience while strengthening critical infrastructure in Champaign County.
