Ardmore Roderick entered a Mentor-Protégé agreement with WSP to provide Phase II engineering services required for the preparation of contract plans, specifications and estimates for the replacement of the existing bridge structure carrying I-290 over Salt Creek.
As part of the mentor-protégé agreement, an entry level Ardmore Roderick staff member was trained in the theory of pavement drainage design with the opportunity to demonstrate this knowledge via the development of the temporary drainage plan under the guidance of a WSP professional. The Ardmore Roderick staff member was first taken through the exercise of understanding the process of determining the respective drainage areas and volumes of stormwater runoff to be collected and conveyed based on Chapters 40 and 41 of the IDOT BDE Manual, IDOT Drainage Manual, and applicable Design Policies and Procedures. This knowledge was then applied to verify the existing drainage conditions. Drainage areas were checked using the rational method. Existing conditions were input into Geopak Drainage to produce a drainage flow model. HY-8 was used to model the existing culverts and Hydraulic Toolbox was used to verify the inlet/scupper spacing of the existing system.
Once comfortable with the various software applications and drainage calculations, the entry level Ardmore Roderick staff member was guided through the process of developing the temporary drainage system. Temporary drainage was developed adjusting to various stages of construction to accommodate the 25-year storm event. Ardmore Roderick’s Professional Engineer then performed the QC/QA of the plans.
